Your job
Know the defense
Most teams we play use two short defenders, two deep defenders, and one rusher from the 7-yard bag.
Each short defender guards half the field underneath, from the sideline to the middle. That's too much for one player. She can't cover the flat and the middle at the same time.
So the QB almost always reads the same person: the short defender on the side the play goes to. If she goes wide, throw inside. If she stays inside, throw wide. If she comes up, throw over her.
Throw to the open grass, not to the girl.
What you see, what we call
For coaches and the QB. Watch the defense when Z goes in motion.
Make the read
Quarterbacks, this one's for you. Every answer is one defender and one decision.
Every play, every time
Sell your fake
Every play looks the same for the first second. If you don't have the ball, run like you do. Your fake is what gets someone else open.
Full-speed motion
Z, your motion is the same speed on every play. If you slow down on fakes, the defense will figure it out.
One read
QB, know before the snap which defender you're reading. Watch only her, then make the throw. The ball has to be out before the rusher gets there.
Find the grass
Receivers, against zone, don't keep running into a defender. Find the open space and stop in it, facing the QB.
Flip it with a tag
When coach calls "Left," X becomes the motion player and the whole play runs the other way.
Rules to remember
The QB can't run with the ball. The rusher starts at the 7-yard bag. Near midfield and the end zone are no-run zones, so we have to pass there, which is why the jet touch pass matters. Once the ball is handed off, every defender can cross the line, so handoff plays have to hit fast. On fakes, nobody but the rusher can cross, so a defender who jumps a fake is offside.
